An unexpected meteor, 50 feet (15 meters) wide and weighing approximately 7,000 tons, exploded over Russia yesterday - it was previously thought to be the prelude to 2012 DA14 but now declared completely unrelated and even more of an alerting surprise.

Some videos no longer available.

The explosion over central Russia, shook the ground, breaking windows and has now wounded 1,200 people! Those directly under its path of flight experienced momentary darkness as it flew overhead.

200 of the wounded are said to be children. There have also been a handful of deaths, one woman died due to a heart attack from the event.

Apparently the military have been put on full alert to shoot down any further meteor showers.

2012 DA14 has now passed but because this incident was unexpected, emergency services are still on full alert.

That RT news report is from yesterday.

According to RT's latest reports, the Russian meteorology centre says if the meteor hadn't exploded in the air, but had hit the ground fully formed, it would have released the power of 20 atom bombs!

This sure is a "heads-up" for future fly-bys of large asteroids.

Wonderful post - Thank You Dr N. Idea

I'd been meaning to google for videos like these, but never got around to it (AB takes all my time Wink ) - so this was a marvellous way to catch up. Absorbing viewing.

Similar meteors hitting the Earth about once a year, generally the fragments fall into areas as for example oceans, forests, deserts, and it is for this reason that we do not realize! But this time it happened in the vicinity of a town...images are spectacular and terrifying, luckily has disintegrated before reaching the soil...would have been a massacre!!

After this meteor shower in Russia,I personally have had a bit of apprehension about the passage of the 2012 DA14.

Scientists and researchers say it is impossible, for the moment, sighting a meteor so small(as the fallen one in Russia) before they collide with the Earth's atmosphere and before having a surveillance system, which requires sophisticated tools and very expensive, will pass twenty years.

I think that us mere mortals we are still vulnerable by the Universe....we just have to pray(I joke, or almost Laughing )!!

Not quite, you misunderstand this incident.

Meteors like this one, 50 feet (15 meters) wide and weighed approximately 7,000 tons, (I should update the topic) only hit the Earth every few decades and are usually burnt up before collision and do not always explode.

If you had played the first video you would hear the numerous terrifying explosions.

This dramatic meteor explosion was apparently the biggest such blast in more than a century.

This space rock exploded 12 to 15 miles (19 to 24 kilometers) above Earth's surface, releasing roughly 15 times as much energy as the atomic bomb the United States dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima during World War II.

Play the 1st video again - listen to how violent the atmosphere feels - well that explosion is taking place 15 miles up! So imagine how loud it would be if you were up in the sky with it!

This meteor was made of compressed solid stone... these types stay solid for longer but suffer pressure inside as they enter and instead cause them to explode.

If it had hit the Earth it would have levelled an entire region.

7000 tons???we read different newspapers...its weight was estimated at 40 tons!!!
however I understand correctly, I understand what happened...ok the fragments were large but larger objects have fallen to Earth in the past...the only difference is that this time it happened in a village....I say this with assurance because I read so many comments of experts, scientists and researchers!!

I saw that video yesterday morning on the network...I heard the explosions...it speaks of nine explosions before the crash to the ground!

You don't need to read a newspaper to know that if that explosion is taking place 15 miles up that it has the potential destructive force of several nuclear bombs.

Just my opinion.

I wonder what might have been if this event had occurred at the height of the cold war. With tensions as high as they were could this have been misconceived as an attack from the Western Bloc and signaled immediate retaliation. Something to think about.

I watched a report on CNN last night and there was a professor on there saying that the majority of the damage was caused by a sonic boom created by the meteor (weighing 10 tonnes and traveling 33,000 km/h). The majority of the building damage was broken glass which in turn caused a great deal of the injuries. He also went on to say that this meteor was too small to be detected, therefore no warning was given. He also said that very large meteors or asteroids, that could potentially hit the Earth, would be detected and could also have their paths' altered so in fact they would pose no harm. I hope he's right!

I look at it this way...when it's time to go it's time to go. Live life to the fullest and have no regrets, because life, in itself, is way too short.

I agree that the meteor had the potential strength of many atomic bombs...but I was referring to the weight you indicated,7000 tons is false!!
The meteor of 1908 had a weight higher than this, 300 tons!!
My opinion is that, from the scientific point of view, this is not a rare event.
Often larger objects fall in remote areas, oceans, forests etc...
The solution, in order to avoid bloodshed, massacres is a monitoring system able to identify meteors, about ten meters long...like the one that has fallen in Russia(15 meters)!!

Well Space.com is a very accurate source. You were probably reading an earlier article where only civilian eye-witness accounts could estimate. Scientifically it would have been much bigger.

The 1908 asteroid remained in tact until just a few meters above the ground, thus having more of an impact for its size. This asteroid was only unseen because it approached from the sun and could not be detected by telescopes due to the light.

Still don't believe me? Here is the crater of the largest remaining part of Friday's meteor...

Edit: I removed this video because the Russian news station got the report wrong. They showed footage of "The Door To Hell" natural gas field which has been burning for decades... however the crater is online - it's nowhere near as big but is still several meters across. That said it probably broke into several pieces and so they may find more.

If this meteor exploded 15 miles away (in the sky) and could shake the ground, shatter windows and still hit the ground THIS big - then it must have been huge.

Space.com wrote:
Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., now say the meteor weighed about 10,000 tons and was travelling 40,000 mph (64,373 km/h) when it exploded.

i saw this on the news. was sort of sad that i did not hit on land so we could view the rock afterwards. still unsure how big it was since i have heard about it many times and each time it seems as if the size has changed from the size of a large bus to the size of a VW of course i guess the size is just guesses till they send a dive team down to recover it .

My dear Dr.Nurburg,
if what he says the NASA, it is true...we were lucky!!!
On the web there are thousands of sources, each has its own size, the length, the weight of the meteorite in question...there is still a lot of confusion!!
I can only say that I'm as St. Thomas:"Seeing is believing" Laughing
I want, nay I demand evidence...first find the meteorite and then we'll talk...on this point I agree with carltontx Wink

Ps:...I have another question by the way...why the asteroid 2012 DA14 has been monitored and the meteor of Russia, no?...I do not see much difference between 15 meters and 45 meters!!

My dear Fullmoon, the evidence is:
  • NASA quotes
  • Russian Television clips above
  • The explosion /=/ distance /=/ destruction

Now I'm gonna drink some Goranger and smoke some Russian tobacco. Lol.

Laterz...

Here's an update from National Geographic, confirming its tremendous size, weight and explosive force.

NG Article

If the thing exploded with the force of 20 nukes, then imagine how strong it must have originally been before breaking into bits!
