It has been a few years but the sequel has claimed the third biggest July 4th weekend start before inflation is taken into account! Its opening long weekend record is surpassed by only Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon and Spider-man 2!
Despicable Me 2 earned an estimated $82.5 million this past Independence Day weekend! This is especially impressive given that the film only had a $76 million budget guaranteeing even bigger profits!
In contrast, Disney's The Lone Ranger was a huge disappointment at the box office with only an estimated $29.432 million earned this past weekend. This is particularly bad as its budget was anywhere from $215 to 250 million!
