I can understand rapists being distrusted but ATHEISTS? Shocked

Here is the article about the study:

http://thenonbeliever.com/atheists/study-finds-atheists-rapists-least-trusted/

The most surprising sentence is this one:

Quote:
The researchers found that religious believers thought that descriptions of untrustworthy people – people who steal or cheat – were more likely to be atheists than Christians, Muslims, Jews, gays or feminists.

What do you think of this study? Confused

Well this is the great equinox of why religious "conditioning" can have detrimental effect on one's perception of others.

I know 3 people who are atheist and they are pretty cool. Nothing shady about them.

I think this is ridiculous but it does not surprise me. I honestly don't care what a person's religious beliefs are and would rather not even know. This is not how I decide who to trust.

I agree. Religious beliefs should not be important when deciding who to be friends with. I never go to church because too many people there take religion too far. I believe in God but I don't talk about it all the time and rub it in people's faces.

Atheists are interesting people. They don't shove their belief system down your throat like many Bible thumpers do. For the most part they are open minded and willingly discuss religious beliefs versus their own. To say that people trust rapists before they trust an Atheist is poor. I'd like a good look at the data. IE: number of people sampled, ages, number of each sex, etc. That would certainly shed a lot of light on this "study".

I believe in God as well and have been to church but found it to be very uncomfortable. Not because they were taking it too far, but just the fact that I would rather do things on my own. Also to get back to the original discussion, there are many so called ''religious believers'' that I do not trust from pure experience. Another good reason why your beliefs mean nothing to me.

Worry not pimpin, if your only experiences of religions have put you off sharing their ways, then that is not your fault. In that respect you don't need to follow a religion to go to heaven.

But there are good religions amidst all the stereotypes, and religion does make the journey towards God more spiritually enjoyable and interesting, particularly if you appreciate religious diversity.

But anyway, that experience needs to arrive of its own accord, so have a beer on me for now. Lol.

Cool

Over the past couple of years there has been a huge uproar/debate over bus ads that the Atheist community want to run. Initially the bus company here where I live refused to run their ads but later recanted when they were told if they refused they would be in violation of the Canadian advertising standards and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Here is a pic of what the ads look like...

Now would I not trust someone just because of their religious beliefs...No. That being said I think I would be a little leery of anyone who tried to force their beliefs on me whether it be an Atheist, a Protestant or even a Jim and Tammy Faye Baker.

I like how the ad says, "There's probably no God....". Atheists don't believe in a God. Period. By putting "probably" in that statement they affirm there is a chance they're wrong. In my mind I would I'd rather be safe than sorry. If they want to say there is no God then they should just outright do that. The group who put that ad out there are chicken*****.

I believe in Intelligent design, makes sense. And I also believe in a "God" which to me is just a great powerful force that exists everywhere throughout the universe and is infinite, This Energy source might be where our souls(energy) goes to after we die and we become one again. But this is all just my opinion and in theory or course.

Things would be easier and more peaceful if they just didn't bother putting stuff like that on buses or anywhere else. Christians, atheists and everyone else.....just don't do crap like that and nobody will get mad. That's how I see it.

This isn't the first such study to show that people distrusted atheists. There was a University of Minnesota study from 2003 that showed atheists ranked below other minority groups such as immigrants, gays and lesbians, conservative Christians, Jews and Muslims. They did that study to measure the level of distrust people had for Muslims in light of 9/11.

The current study was done by the University of British Columbia and the media release from that university is here:

http://www.publicaffairs.ubc.ca/2011/11/30/ubc-study-explores-distrust-of-atheists-by-believers/

The contact information for the author of the study is to the right there if you want even more detailed data.

The irony is that most atheists probably don't base trust on others beliefs.
Perhaps the people that have been conditioned to see people based on their beliefs are the ones whos morals should be questioned.

Just a thought.

Fact: Study shows that allot of Catholic priest have a passion for little boys, it points out these priest are moved from place to place to avoid arrest.

also its know priest are rapping nuns leaving them pregnant and guess what the vatican acknowledged this to the public after the scandal got so big.
Massachusetts houses the most pregnant ladies in the world.

Fact: Study shows Christians runs the highest hypocrisy rate among them all.
every one knows the Swaggart story and many other behind him.

BTW this leads me to two of Thomas Paine quotes:

The Vatican is a dagger in the heart of Italy.

My mind is my own church "my favorite" I believe Paine is saying that he worships his own way, and not by organized faiths.

No mater how you look at it organized faiths is the root of most if not all evils.

I say believe in what you want , I myself want to believe there's something higher while keeping a open mind , cause once a mind is closed one become numb to all thats around you.

Hey I should publish that as my own quote.
