I live right in the heart of Christchurch, We had a 7.1 earthquake here on september 4th last year, It happened in the early hours of the morning and we had no fatals, but the two big quakes we had here tuesday has been much more devastating.
At 12:51 pm we had a 6.3 quake, several minutes later a 5.7.
But is much worse due to the fact of the timing, and that the quakes are so shallow, both at a depth of 5km, where as the one in september was 33km deep, we have had 1000's of aftershocks since the September quake, but now these are new earthquakes in a different location, but still city cental, but different plates.
On tuesday we were at home, and our two kids in school.
It happened at such a bad time, but some what lucky it happened at lunch time, many people were out of the buildings to lunch in the city center.
So many collapsed building, at the moment the death toll is at 72 comfirmed, but more than 300 still missing.
It breaks our hearts to see so many fatals, and one of the 72 comfirmed dead is my partners step dads daughter.
She was in the CTV building.
The city has huge damage all over, we have had great support and help from around New Zealand and around the world, more than 700 specialists have flown in from overseas so far, which is a great help for search and recovery.
I dont want to go into detail of the damage, or what and how has happened with the tradgic lives lost.
It is amazing to see many people being rescued from these buildings tho, we have seen countless rescues, but with approx 300 still missing the death toll will surely rise.
Such a surreal feeling here, Christchurch has had it hard in the past months, its such a sad time.
We are having so many strong aftershocks here all the time.
Not good for the heart, and the stress levels.
I thank everyone from ArcadeBoss for there warm kind comments, and everyone around New Zealand and the world who is helping in the ways they can, we really need it.
At a later date I will post further detail, and go into things more, at the moment its hard talking about it all, thank you all again for your prayers and thoughts.

Good to hear that you are okay, but sorry about the loss of lives . This is tough enough, but coming so soon after last rebuild makes it tougher. Hang in there. |

I am looking at the news footage, it is a very sad situation, although the building codes are strict in NZ, damage from earthquake is great with over 100 fatalities. The epicenter was so close to the city center, which was most unfortunate.
What I find unnerving about the earthquakes is dealing with repeating aftershocks. Even if they are mostly harmless, they can really add to the stress levels. |

115 comfirmed dead, 225 still missing.
No one has been found alive in three days.
More than 1000 search and rescue experts from oveseas and all our resourses are trying there best to find more, but seems very unlikely.
Very sad.
There saying 2/3's of the city building are beyond repair.
Goverment estamates total repair bill at over 30 billion NZ dollars, and more than 5 billion has already been spent from the September 4th quake here.
My partners step-sister is comfirmed dead.
So many tradgic lives lost, and untold horrific injured people.
The constant aftershocks are getting hard to handle, all of us are so paranoid of another big one, maybe tonight, next week, next month.
We hope it never comes. |
