I often ask casually "how long will this take?".
Only about 5 minutes.
Ok, I say .... then set my timer, then 5 minutes later mid-sentence I say "Your time's up - BYE", and hang up.
(If nothing else it might teach them to tell the truth up front )
I ask them for their home phone number so I can call them at all times of the day to inquire if they're willing to buy a product or take a survey. They always thank me for my time and hang up. _________________ -2nd Person to Join

one time they started explaining what they were selling and i just said " wait a minute do you want to talk about onion rings and pizza" and then i just stared saying onion rings and pizza non stop for like a minute and then i asked the lady is that what you want to talk about? and she said "yes onion rings and pizza"(in a sarcastic voice) and she hung up

I usually don't talk to telemarketers. I have call display so I don't answer the phone. In the case I accidentally answer the phone, I tell them to take me off their call list and then hang up.

Thanks for the reminder! I also have call display and when it says name and number unavailable or private; I will definitely follow your lead! I'm just an optimist at heart so I used to hope that it was someone other than a telemarketer.
